I'm not sure if I have herpes

Hi,
I'm new to the forum and I just had a doctor tell me yesterday I have herpes. I have been engaged for 5 months and I getting married May 15th. My future husband and I have not cheated on one-another. We have had a lot of sex since are engagement but he hasn't had any sign of an outbreak, he has a clean sexual history. In addition, my doctor didn't preform a blood test before she diagnosed me, she just looked and told me I had herpes. I have two sores that I got right after shaving (one on the area outside of my right lips, the other under my pee hole), it doesn't hurt when I pee unless the pee touches the sore, I have clear discharge, and I have two swollen lymph nodes. My fiance, bless his heart, doesn't believe I have herpes. But I just want some honest answers to my questions. Can a doctor be 100% sure by just looking? What are the chances I have passed it to my fiance in the last 5mnths? Can you get a cold sore on you genitals from a cold sore on someones face?

Hi and welcome. NO doctor can tell you with 100% clarity that you have herpes from a visual inspection. You and your bf need to swab/culture and blood tests done to confirm which type of hs you have and don't have. Have a look at the panel on the left, it explains all about the tests available.

Cold sores on your face are oral herpes either type 1 or type 2 and yes they can be transferred to your genitals via oral sex

I second and add to what GntiNh said.

• Visual exams for herpes are notoriously inaccurate.

• Did your doc do anything to confirm her visual guesstimate, i.e. did she draw blood for a test or do a swab/culture of the lesions on your vulva?

• Yes, herpes can be transferred via oral sex

• Just to clarify things a bit, I would ask for more info about your fiance's "clean sexual history." Can you clarify what you mean by that? How it was determined?
