Hi Nora and Beachday,
Here is some information that you may find helpful to clarify the facts about taking Lysine.
Arginine is an amino acid that is necessary for our body and does do some wonderful things, including assisting the body's immune system.
Arginine is also what the herpes virus requires to replicate and to cause outbreaks or symptoms. This is because it is essentially the "food source" for the virus once inside the human body.
What science has found is that foods which are extremely rich in arginine and low in lysine can sometimes trigger an outbreak for some people. Eating too much of these foods can create an arginine rich environment in the body which the herpes virus may benefit from.
So, cutting back or avoiding these foods (such as chocolate) can be helpful to prevent outbreaks. Keep in mind that even if you avoid these arginine rich foods, and take a lysine supplement, you are not eliminating arginine from your diet, you are only helping to moderately reduce the level of arginine in your body so that it has less potential to influence the HSV.
Here is where lysine supplements come into the picture. Lysine is another amino acid that also does some wonderful things for the body. It is found naturally in foods and you need lysine in your diet (just like arginine).
How lysine helps with herpes is that it has the potential to counteract some of the body's production of arginine. This is a natural process that happens when you eat foods that contain lysine and arginine. It is simply the way the body works. You can take advantage of this natural chemistry by taking a lysine supplement to help cancel out foods that you eat that contain excessive amount of arginine (and not much lysine).
To our knowledge and after extensive research on this topic, our support team have only found one report of lysine affecting the immune system from one person (which is the same source referenced occassionally by people on this forum). It did not provide any reference or evidence of studies to support this claim. To the contrary, there is a large amount of clinical data and literature demonstrating the safety of lysine as a natural method to help guard against HSV symptoms.
We have some new articles coming soon which will cover this topic in more detail, so please stay tuned to our information resource if you are interested in learning more.
Hope this helps,
Shenda
